You called someone to mark what's buried outside. That doesn't help once the saw's through the top layer of concrete and headed toward rebar nobody knew was there. HPLS scans slabs across Colorado before anyone drills, cuts, or cores into them, so what's actually inside the concrete shows up before the blade does.

What's Usually Hiding in a Slab

• Rebar: Drill into it and you'll dull a bit fast. Cut through a structural section and you've weakened the one thing holding it together.
• Post-tension cable: These are under real tension. Sever one and it doesn't just fail quietly, it can whip back through the slab hard enough to hurt whoever's standing nearby.
• Conduit and wiring: Poured right into the slab, with nothing on the surface hinting it's there.
• Old pipe nobody wrote down: An addition, a remodel, a repair from twenty years ago. It's still down there whether or not it made it onto any plan.

Plans Are a Starting Point, Not the Answer

Even with drawings in hand, what's actually in a slab and what's on paper don't always line up. Someone added a room fifteen years ago and never updated the file. A repair got made and nobody documented it. By the time a slab's been standing a few decades, whoever knew exactly what went into it has usually moved on. Scanning shows what's really there instead of what the paperwork assumes.

When to Get This Done

• Before core drilling for plumbing, electrical, or HVAC penetrations. A drill bit doesn't stop for rebar or cable, and by the time you feel resistance, you've already hit it.
• Before saw cutting a slab, wall, or deck. A blade cuts blind, and whatever's in its path won't announce itself until the cut's already made.
• Before anchoring equipment, railings, or heavy fixtures. Anchors go in deep enough to reach what's below the surface, and a bolt through a line means redoing the whole installation.
• Before demolition on any structure where the plans are incomplete or missing. Heavy equipment doesn't distinguish between old concrete and whatever's cast into it.

What You Get

A technician runs ground-penetrating radar over the area and marks whatever it picks up right on the surface, color-coded so you can tell rebar from conduit from cable at a glance. You'll get a walkthrough before anyone packs up, plus a written report if it needs to go in a project file or back up a permit.
